A rich history & family tradition.
JeffCo High School Rodeo Team was formed in the early 80's and has passed down rodeo tradition from generation to generation since. A family organization, the rodeo team is made up of youth from all over the State of Colorado, their parents, and a small Board of Directors.
Because most rodeo teams are comprised of youth who have a great deal of former rodeo experience, many people do not know that the Jeffco HS Rodeo Team includes members who grew up in very urban areas and have only just learned rodeo sports through our team coaches. As a diverse team, the Jeffco group has recieved its' fair share of critique from skeptics over the years, but as former Vice President John Wilson put it, "Kids may come to us with no prior rodeo experience, but they learn not only how to compete but win, which silences our skeptics. Our team not only gains rodeo competition experience, they also learn the value and meaning of the western way of life.”
Academics are also a highly important part of this rodeo team, as Jeffco High School Rodeo members compete for yearly scholarships. College-bound seniors can achieve these scholarships through the rodeo, and pay the funds directly to the students' attending college.
Certainly the Jefferson County High School Rodeo Team would not be a success without the support of local sponsors, generous donors, a strong community, and friends of all things rodeo. As a non-profit organization, the rodeo team relies heavily upon sponsorship dollars contributed annually, donations, and advertisements placed in the annual rodeo program.
These funds go to produce the annual rodeo performance, nearly a $20,000 event.
The rodeo team participates in a long list of traditional rodeo events for girls and boys in junior high and high school.
Girls' events include barrel racing, breakaway roping, pole bending, goat tying, team roping and girls cutting horse.
The boys' events include tie down (calf) roping, steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, team roping and the cutting horse competition. The coed event is team roping.
